THE CAMPAIGN FOR MUSEUMS
The Campaign for Museums launched the first Museums Week in
1996; in 2000 Museums Week and Galleries Week combined to stage
Museums and Galleries Month in May. Find out more about the
history here and our supporters and sponsors.
Museums Week was first held just over ten years ago in 1996.
It was the brainchild of Loyd Grossman and supported by the
Museums and Galleries Commission (now Museums Libraries and
Archives Council MLA). It continued as an annual event in May
with support from the Department for Culture Media and Sport.
The Campaign for Museums was registered as a charity to run
the event in 1998.
The Millennium provided the opportunity for Museums Week and
Galleries Week (organised by the National Association for Gallery
Education engage) to come together and plan a much bigger promotion – Museums
and Galleries Month – in May. There was support from
DCMS as well as the Millennium Fund and sponsors.
The success of Museums and Galleries Month in 2000 confirmed
it as an annual event. Museums and galleries took full advantage
of the opportunity to promote special events and activities
under the umbrella of Museums and Galleries Month and gradually
(despite operating on a very limited budget) the event became
a fixture in the calendar.
Museums and Galleries Month continues as The Campaign for
Museums’ major activity. The Campaign also organises
marketing conferences and seminars and participates in museum
and galleries events and activities.
The Campaign for Museums continues to receive support from
Museums Libraries and Archives Council MLA through Renaissance
and from Arts Council England as well as from sponsors and
funders.
